Georgia Gold Rush
Placer gold deposits were found in Georgia in 1828. In 1829 a newspaper ran an article describing the opening
of two gold mines and the first North American gold rush was on. By the early 1830's there were tens of
thousands of miners and prospectors looking to strike it rich. With all the gold being found Congress decided
to build the Dahlonega Mint in 1937 which produced gold coins from 1838 through 1861. Gold was being mined
through the middle of the 20th century, but all of the easy gold had been found by the early 1840s. When news
hit of
gold in California many of the
Georgian miners left for these new gold grounds.
